Fantastic Video from VJ Day

Written by Ed on August 25, 2010 – 11:00 pm -

I’ll not forget the evening celebration. I was at the home of a man who restored my small Kent brand radio to working order. As he turned it on just after 7 p.m. EDT to check his repair, president Truman announced the Japanese surrender. Ken’s son, Bob, was home on leave from the Navy and asleep on their living room couch. Ken rushed upstairs to wake his son with the great news. Our town, Columbiana, Ohio, went nuts until far into the night. We rode our bicycles through the village streets with flags attached. Cars continued to circle the small downtown area with horns blaring and tossing small firecrackers along the curb. My Dad went into our backyard and fired off his shotgun in celebration. He and Mom also consumed a few adult beverages.

65 Years Ago my Dad shot this film along Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender. Kodachrome 16mm film: God Bless Kodachrome, right? I was able to find an outfit (mymovietransfer.com) to do a much superior scan of this footage to what I had previously posted, so I re-did this film and replaced the older version. There are more still images from this amazing day, in color, at discoveringhawaii.com

Il Silenzio

Written by Ed on July 9, 2010 – 1:40 pm -

Melissa Venema is a 13-year-old trumpeter from Amsterdam, Holland. And she is unbelievably talented. Here she plays with the world-famous Johann Strauss Orchestra. She plays a beautiful piece called Il Silenzio. It’ll sound familiar to anyone who’s heard a military bugler. It shares a melody with Taps.
