Murmuration
Written by Ed on May 7, 2012 – 11:00 pm -Murmuration – it is something amazing to see.
No one knows why they do it. Yet each fall, thousands of starlings dance in the twilight above England and Scotland.
The birds gather in shape-shifting flocks called murmurations, having migrated in the millions from Russia and Scandinavia
to escape winter’s frigid bite. Scientists aren’t sure how they do it, either.
The starlings’ murmurations are manifestations of swarm intelligence, which in different contexts is practiced by schools of fish,
swarms of bees and colonies of ants. As far as I am aware, even complex algorithmic models haven’t yet explained the starlings’ aerobatics,
which rely on the tiny birds’ quicksilver reaction time of under 100 milliseconds to avoid aerial collisions—and predators—in the giant flock.
Two young women were out for a late afternoon canoe ride and fortunately one of them remembered to bring her video camera.
What they saw was a wonderful murmuration display, caught in the short video – below.

Ever See An Eagle Do The Breast Stroke?
Written by Ed on March 24, 2012 – 1:30 pm -This footage was taken at MallardLakes subdivision in Baton Rouge .
Someone had shot a nutria, and it was floating dead in the water.
I can’t believe what this eagle did to bring that nutria in.
I never saw an Eagle doing a breast-stroke before.

Deer Climbs into Boat, Hangs Out with and Humps Fishermen
Written by Ed on March 5, 2012 – 11:03 pm -Imagine this: You’re heading out on the lake with the guys, and while you’re still getting the boat in the water, you see a blaze orange vest heading down the hill. Just some hunter, right? Common sense would say yes, but this hunter has more taste for your carbon-fiber rod than that can of Natty Ice you just cracked open.
These Michigan fishermen from Betts Guide Service got the surprise of a lifetime when a young buck climbed into their boat, sniffing and nibbling at just about everything within reach. Obviously someone’s pet, the deer followed the men around on shore, and apparently took a special liking to one guy in particular.
This video’s an oldie, but we just couldn’t help but post such a hilarious/adorable video. We hate to get so attached, however, knowing full well his relatives make such great burgers.
