Create a Run command shortcut

Written by Ed on April 25, 2007 – 9:00 pm -

As you know, using the Run dialog box to quickly launch certain applications or utilities can come in handy in a number of situations. For example, suppose you regularly use the Run dialog box to open a command prompt by typing Cmd in the Open text box.

You can access the Run dialog box by clicking the Start button and then clicking Run, or by pressing [Windows]R. However, both of these methods require two steps to open the Run dialog box. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could access the Run dialog box with a single click?

You can create a shortcut to the Run command. Simply select the Run command on the Start menu, and drag it to the Quick Launch toolbar. The new shortcut uses the same icon, so it’s easy to identify.

However, the shortcut’s name will be &Run. . ., which you’ll see in a popup when you hover your mouse pointer over the shortcut. These extra characters come from the Start menu command configuration.

In this case, the ampersand character signifies that the R is underlined and acts as the hotkey. The ellipsis signifies that accessing the Run command from the Start menu opens a secondary dialog box.

You can rename the shortcut to something more appropriate, such as Run Command, by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting Rename.

Data Eraser

Written by Ed on April 24, 2007 – 9:00 pm -

Truly deleting a file from your system isn’t easy. In most cases, files seemingly removed from a hard drive via the Recycle Bin, a disk format, or even fdisk actually remain there until new files overwrite them. Data Eraser erases the content of any file without its being recoverable by a data recovery expert or, according to the maker’s Web site, “even the most hated spy agencies.” The program doesn’t actually delete any files, instead it renders the file unusable and “just about impossible to recover.” The program is free, though donations are accepted. Its developer, an Australia-based data recovery specialist, challenges any data recovery expert to successfully recover data lost, damaged, or deleted by Data Eraser to its original form. This could make the software useful for everyday computer users who are concerned about privacy, as well as for data specialists, business users, and government agencies. Data Eraser’s main drawback is its cumbersome text/DOS-based interface. But this feature merely underscores that its intended audience is advanced users. The program is compatible with DOS and with Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP.

Another way of Getting to a URL

Written by Ed on April 23, 2007 – 9:00 pm -

How to get to the web if your browser is blocked or broken

Web browser software is blocked by administrative policy, or not working? You may still be able to get to web sites. This is a case where Help can actually be helpful!
Open a program such as Microsoft Calculator.
Press the F1 key to open the Help window.
In the top left corner, click the “document with a question mark” icon.
Select “Jump to URL.”
Type in the URL of the website you want to visit, and it comes up in the right pane of the Help window.
Important tip: you must type the full URL, with http://, not the shortened version that starts with www
